SURFACE

Gallery Project presents Surface, a group exhibition featuring artists who employ the decorative as a means to engage the audience.

The exhibit opens at noon on Wednesday, February 20 and continues through 4pm on Sunday, March 30, 2008. The opening reception is Friday, February 22, 6-9.

The decorative implies a personally derived, organized system of surface embellishments that is either applied by the artist; or the ornamentation that remains as a byproduct of the artistic technique or process used to create the work.  The resultant “surface” of the presented artwork (whether two or three-dimensional) fuels the corresponding dialogue between the viewer and the work.

Additionally, Surface strives to highlight the past, present and future of ornament, displaying work that demonstrates the prevalence of decorative techniques and methods that transcend the ordinary.  This multi-media exhibit also explores cultural differences in the decorative sense, and how ornament can be used to express distinctiveness and social connection.

The exhibit is curated by Gallery Project collaborator, Cristen Velliky, an adjunct faculty member of Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan.

Gallery Project is a fine art collaborative.  Its mission is to provide a venue for contemporary art that is culturally aware, individualistic, courageous, and thought provoking.  Artists representing a diverse range of visual arts curate and participate in its nine annual themed exhibits.

Gallery Project is located at 215 South Fourth Avenue in Ann Arbor. Gallery hours are: Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 6; Friday and Saturday, noon to 9; and Sunday, noon to 4. The gallery is closed on Mondays. For more information, call 734-997-7012 or visit the website at thegalleryproject.com.
