Gallery Project presents Unseen, a dual-site, multi-media exhibition in which over 50 local, regional, national, and international artists and scientists explore the thresholds of visibility, revealing crucial, unseen phenomena that impact, inform and enrich our daily lives. In Detroit, Unseen opens on Friday, August 1 at 1550 Winder in the Eastern Market and runs through August 31 (opening reception: Friday, August 1 from 6-9pm). In Ann Arbor, It opens at the Ann Arbor Art Center at 117 W. Liberty on Friday, September 12 and runs through October 12 (opening reception on Friday, September 12 from 6-9pm).

Many contemporary artists and scientists dedicate themselves to researching and expressing the unseen, to making the invisible visible. They might be motivated to advance their disciplines through the process of discovery, or be fascinated by the challenge and adventure of harnessing emerging technologies to express ideas. They might believe it is important to uncover secrets, to disclose purposely hidden information, some of which strikes at the heart of democracy, personal freedom, and the survival of Planet Earth. They might also seek to awaken consciousness, to initiate conversation about outcomes, implications and possibilities. They might wish simply to breach assumed limits of human perception and comprehension to see more of what is and is possible.

The invisible includes material or actions purposely kept from public view by government and corporations, often contrary to the public good. It includes obscure phenomena brought to light by advances in technology and its applications. It also includes unseen populations that are underreported, or outside focus of mainstream media. Artists and scientists explore micro, meso or macro levels of invisibility, from microbial and sub-atomic worlds to social, global and universal phenomena.

Artists include Heather Accurso, Elizabeth Claire Alberts, Art is Open Source (Salvatore Iaconesi and Oriana Persico), B612 Foundation, Brett Balogh, Carolyn Reed Barritt, Josh Begley, James Bridle, Lea Bult, Seder Burns, Jeff Cancelosi, James Cogswell ( and Greg Tarle, Jason Eaton, Brian Nord, and Stephen Rush), Ruth Crowe, Steve Davis (and students from Green Hill School, Chehalis, WA), Rocco DePietro, Tirtza Even, James Freeman, Google Earth Outreach (Chief Almir Surui and Rebecca Moore), Mark Herald, Sarah Knudtson, Kyle Kramer, Scott Lapham (and students from the Rhode Island Training School), Jennifer Lavers, Karen McCullough (and students from Fresh Eyes, New Mexico), Robert Mirek and Chris Merlo, Michael Nagara, Brian D.
